What is a downlight and are there different types?

A downlight is any light that illuminates in a downward direction. It can have a very strong effect, or it can be used to bring soft, warm lighting into a space.

• LED downlights are very popular, because they draw less wattage (on average 5 watts) and produce less heat and therefore are more energy efficient than old-fashioned light bulbs. They also offer more effective directional guidance than traditional options.
• You can get a fixed downlight or one that has directional options, depending on your needs.
• Dimmers. For a softer, more romantic or peaceful feel, choose a downlight that has a controllable dimmer so that you can increase or decrease the intensity of the light as you wish. Downlights with dimmers are especially popular in bedrooms, bathrooms and baby rooms.

How do I choose the right downlights?

Downlights provide general, all-purpose lighting to an area. This makes them ideal for literally any section of the home or office. Think about what you will be lighting and where.

You also need to decide whether you’re installing downlights purely for functional use, or whether they will be used to create a certain effect. If the latter, you may decide to get downlights with dimmers, or group them into different circuits so that you can create different lighting “zones”.

Take note : To change your old halogen or incandescent lamps to dimmable led lamps your old dimmer will need to be changed.

Therefore our quotation will include:
The downlighter fitting
The downlighter lamp holder
The led lamp its self (dimmable or non dimmable)
The colour tone of the lamp
The dimmer if required. 

Then there are the integrated LED downlighter fittings. Integrated means the led is built into the light fitting.

What are Lumens and how many do I need for my space?

In the past, bulb brightness was measured by watts (W) because it was directly related to the power required to achieve that level of brightness.

However, these days brightness is more appropriately classified by lumens (lm), which measure the total amount of visible light from a light source. The higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb. Note that a bulb’s lux (lx) measurement refers to concentration of light, not how bright it is.  One lux is equal to one lumen per square metre.

The lumens required for a particular space all depend on what you’re using it for, the height of the ceiling, the size and shape or the room and the colour used in the surrounding environment (walls, floors and furnishings).

Remember, dark colours absorb light, so if you are trying to light a darker room, you will need more lumens per square meter and a higher lux than a space with neutral wall colours.

What’s the difference between a downlight and a spotlight?

Downlights are used to provide general lighting to an area, while spotlights are used to light up trees, trellises or statues, or draw attention to something (like a work of art) within the home.

Spotlights are really handy in that they can be used to draw attention to decorative pieces or provide lighting to task areas, such as kitchens, offices or other-multipurpose spaces.

Most indoor and outdoor spotlights are adjustable so that you can focus them where they are needed. We also stock LED spotlights that are adjustable so that you can change the intensity of the light.
